Class Schedule (Spring 2019)

PROCEDURES & OPENING/CLOSING DATES

Welcome back, students, and thanks for your patience while we updated our registration software.

Most spring classes will begin the week of March 11. Beginner Agility and Intermediate B begin the week before, many Monday classes begin the week after. New-student orientation will be held at 7pm on Wednesday March 6. Cancellations are anticipated as follows:

  • No classes after 7pm on Monday 3/11 & Monday 5/13 (General Membership meetings)
  • No classes after 5pm on Tuesday 4/9 (Annual Awards Banquet)
  • No agility classes on Thursday 5/2 (setup for SOTC's Jones Road agility trial)
  • Decision to hold classes on Memorial Day (Monday 5/27) will be left to individual instructors 

How you register and pay, and what the opening dates/deadlines are,  will depend on the type of class you wish to take.
  • If you wish to take a Rally, competition obedience, or agility class, you will do so the "old way," via U.S. mail and printable registration forms
  • If you wish to take anything else, you will be able to sign up and pay on-line

      Basic Obedience

      Puppy

      The AKC STAR program (Socialization, Training, Activities, Responsibility), designed to encourage socialization, beginner obedience training, and responsible care for your new puppy. This is the puppy level of the Canine Good Citizen program. For puppies that will be between 12 and 20 weeks of age on the first day. Puppies must have received at least the 2nd DAP shot by the start of class. Limit 8.

      PREREQUISITE:   None! Just see the age and vaccination guidelines above.

        Pre-Basic

        For dogs 5-14 months of age who have taken our Puppy class, or those new to our program and too old for Puppy class. Designed for the older puppy to introduce basic obedience commands while recognizing the special needs of the younger dog. Limit 6.

        PREREQUISITE:   None! Just see the age guidelines above.

        Basic

        For those continuing from Pre-Basic or new to obedience with an older dog (14 months of age and up). Includes walking under control on leash and development of basic obedience commands, including come, sit, down and stay. Limit 6-8.

        Canine Good Citizen

        Teaching you how to train your dog to be a Canine Good Citizen as defined by the AKC. At the last class meeting you will be able to take the AKC test for CGC certification. Limit 6.

        Conformation

        Conformation Drop-ins

        Training dog and handler for the conformation (breed) ring. Breed standards, conformation rules, grooming (dog and handler), etc. will also be covered. 

        PREREQUISITE:   None! Dogs should be at least 12 weeks of age and should have received age-appropriate vaccinations.

        Freestyle

        Canine Freestyle 1 (Introduction)

        Canine Freestyle is essentially obedience behaviors and tricks performed to music. This class will cover some of the basic movements required to build a freestyle routine including left- and right-side heeling, spins, weaves, and other tricks. We will also cover the basics of creating a routine, and everyone will get to perform a brief one by the end of the session. Students should be able to crate or have someone hold their dog during certain portions of the class. Limit 8.

        Freestyle Drop-ins

        A drop-in class for students wishing to practice their freestyle routines. Limit 4.

        Flyball

        Flyball is a relay sport, with 4 dogs running as a team. Because it is a team sport, students need to help set up, take down, and eventually box-load and hold another dog while their own dog is resting. DOGS ARE TO BE CRATED WHEN NOT WORKING (handlers may bring their own crate or use an SOTC guest crate). 

        Beginner Flyball

        This class will teach the basics: retrieving a tennis ball; coming back with the ball; going over jumps to get the ball; doing a swimmers turn off the flyball box while catching; and doing all of this while running fast. Limit 6.

        PREREQUISITE:   SOTC Basic graduate or run-through. Handlers must have basic control of the dog. Dogs should be at least 1 year old. No people- or dog-aggression.

        Rally

        Rally Novice

        An introduction for the first-time show person to all the Rally Novice signs. Students will learn how to walk a course and will work on heeling and sit/down/stand-stays. Limit 6.

        PREREQUISITE:   SOTC Intermediate A graduate or prior experience in Rally or competition obedience classes

        Rally Master

        Rally Drop-ins

        A drop-in class for teams ready to compete. Courses will be set using Intermediate/Advanced signs weeks 1 and 2, Excellent signs weeks 3 and 4, and Master signs weeks 5 and 6. Coaching will be provided, but the exercises will not be taught from scratch. Limited to 6-8 dogs per meeting, depending on individual requirements.

        PREREQUISITE:   Students should have a working knowledge of the exercises at the level of the course they are running.

        Young Dog Competition 3

        A continuation of Young Dog Competition 2. The class focuses on providing a foundation appropriate for young dogs to compete in all levels of obedience competition. Limit 6.

        PREREQUISITE:   Young Dog Competition 2 or instructor permission. For dogs up to 2 years of age. Priority given to students continuing from the prior class.

          What's YOUR Problem? SORRY, CANCELLED

          Crooked fronts or finishes? Poor setups? Anticipation? Breaking stays? Creeping forward on exercises?

          Students will be offered the opportunity to submit their “problem” so that it can be worked on in class. We will use props and shaping to help the dog learn the correct and more precise behavior. Note: We will not be addressing heeling problems in this class.

          Limit 4 students. Auditors welcome. If the class becomes oversubscribed, a second 4-week class will be offered at the conclusion of the first class to accommodate the overflow.

          Agility

          Agility classes limited to 6 dogs unless otherwise noted. Class times include equipment set-up and tear-down. Agility students are required to help set up and tear down. Failure to assist (without instructor permission) will result in ineligibility for next session’s agility classes.  DOGS ARE TO BE CRATED WHEN NOT WORKING (handlers may bring their own crate or use an SOTC guest crate).

          Agility training takes time and practice. Six to eight weeks is not enough for most dogs to master the skills covered in a class. Most dog/handler teams will repeat a class before they move on.

          Agility Foundations

          Agility Foundations is a prerequisite for all future agility classes. The class will cover such aspects as teamwork, self-control, body control, and shaping, as well as several other agility foundation skills.

          PREREQUISITE:   SOTC Basic graduate or instructor permission. Dogs should be at least 5 months old.

          Beginner Agility

          Introduction to contact equipment, jump training, practicing lead-outs, and basic handling. Building drive while maintaining focus and control.

          PREREQUISITE:   SOTC Agility Foundations or equivalent class. Dogs should be at least 8 months old.

            Building confidence on contact equipment, introduction of weave poles, developing dog and handler skills, beginning simple sequencing, and doing grid work.

            Novice Agility

            For students ready (or nearly ready) to start trialing in AKC Novice, CPE level 1-2, or the comparable level in other venues. The class will involve negotiating Novice courses, trying out various handling techniques, building drive, progressing from 6 weave poles to 12, and proofing contacts and start lines.

            PREREQUISITE:   Successfully passing SOTC Intermediate Agility or permission. Dogs must be able to perform full-height contacts, do 6 weave poles, and negotiate sequences of 8-10 obstacles.

            PREREQUISITE:   Students should be competing in Standard Excellent, Masters, or CPE Level 5; or by permission of instructor.

            MEETINGS:   6 meetings, 90 minutes

            PRICE:   Public $102, SOTC members $72 or 9 points

            Agility Drop-ins, Novice to Masters

            Nested courses will be built, course maps will be provided. Run the courses or train as you wish. Please be prompt for setup. Limit 10 teams per class.

            PREREQUISITE: Must be able to safely navigate full-height equipment

            MEETINGS:  6 meetings, 90 minutes

            PRICE:   Public $13, SOTC members $9 or 1 point (per drop-in, pay as you go)

            TO REGISTER:  To reserve a spot for a particular meeting and to confirm that class will be held, email the instructor via the link below (do not sign up with Registrar). Tentative dates:  28 March, 4 April, 25 April, 9 May.
