        Tricks (and Maybe Clicks)

Come learn some tricks your dog does not know! Possibilities are many, and participants are welcome to request particular tricks. Each week at least one new trick will be introduced, and we will review and advance on the prior week’s tricks. Among the tricks we can consider are: shake, high five, circle around you forward or backward, spin in front or on the side of you, go around a cone, get in a box, put front feet on a pad and stand facing you (good for lots of kinds of training), circle around a pedestal while front feet stay on the pedestal (excellent for rear end awareness and keeping butt in for heeling), roll over, play dead, get on a platform, shake, high five, jump over a bar, kiss, touch fist or target stick, bow, figure of 8 through legs, weave through your legs as you walk.  Limit 5.

EQUIPMENT: You will need some low-cost (or no-cost) equipment, such as a cardboard box big enough for your dog to stand in with the sides cut down low (one-quarter to one-third the dog’s leg length). It would also be useful for you to have a clicker: a small hand-held device used to mark a precise point where your dog is doing what you want. Clickers are available at pet supply stores or from chewy.com and amazon.com. Use of a clicker is not required, but the instructor highly recommends that you at least experiment with one.

PREREQUISITE:  SOTC Basic grad or permission.  Students must have basic control of their dogs. No dog-reactive or food-aggressive dogs (there will be some throwing of treats, and some of the dogs will be moving fast).

              Foundations for Precision Heelwork

Precision heeling requires focus and position as well as engagement on the dog’s part. This class will introduce the skills to teach these elements, such as:

              * Food follow (teach dog to watch food hand, keep all four feet on the floor and move confidently in a trot -- at arm’s length, not in heel position)

              * Square sit (teach dog where his feet belong -- all four of them!)

              * “Up here” (watch the focal point)

              * “Find heel” (use pocket hand and perch work to teach dog how to move into heel position, with emphasis on correctly positioning his rear)

              * Set ups (find heel position from anywhere)

              * 1-step heel (get up from sit and take a single step)

              * Move with left leg (stay in heel position and not forge or lag)

              * Nose bridge and hand touches (to help define heel position)

              * 1-step left / right turn cues

              * The importance of teaching heeling as a duration behavior

              * Where to treat so reward doesn’t pull dog out of position

This is a foundations class for young, green dogs. It is not intended to address the heeling problems of older dogs.  Limit 6.

PREREQUISITE:   SOTC members only. Handlers should know how to shape behaviors and be familiar with clickers or the use of marker words. Dogs should have some prior obedience training and be under control. Dogs will need to be crated in the ring for portions of the class.

                    ** NEW ** Handler Discrimination

Handler Discrimination (HD) is the most feared and misunderstood fifth element in AKC Scent Work (SW).  This four-week course will have everyone comfortable with HD and ready to compete at the Novice and Advanced levels.  We will start with everyone bringing a cotton glove or sock that you’ve kept in your shoe, dirty laundry or under your shirt.  Then we’ll place them in SW boxes and teach your dog how to find your scent.  By the fourth week, we’ll be replacing the glove or sock with a piece of cotton and having your dog find that within an Interior Search.

PREREQUISITE:  Prior SW experience is a plus, but not a requirement

                    MEETINGS:  4 weeks, 45 minutes

                    PRICE:   SOTC members $61 (or 4pts + $25), non-members $78

                    • SCT4-TH6   Thursday 6pm starting 11/3 (note later start date; will not meet on 11/24)
                      Instructor Terri Botsford, assistant TBA

                      Agility

With the exception of Agility Foundations, we are unable to admit any new non-member agility students at this time.

Agility students must arrive on time so as to be available to help with equipment setup if required.

Dogs must be crated while students walk the course or move equipment. Non-members may use a guest crate, if available, or bring their own crate each time and carry it out after class.
